4 Important Tips to Safely Exercise During Summer Months

At St. Bernardine Care Providers, we believe that a well-balanced diet and good exercise program are beneficial to people of all ages. However, seniors in Irvine and throughout Orange County should recognize that their exercise routine will have to be amended, given their personal health, physical capabilities, and environmental factors. We want all seniors to exercise safely, especially during the warm summer months. These tips will help senior citizens, as well as, their caretakers develop a routine that works for them.

Exercising Safely During the Summer Months

First talk with your doctor and make sure you are in good health and have the ability to exercise safely. Your doctor can provide you with recommendations for activities that will be good for your specific needs.

Stay hydrated

Always keep a bottle of water with you while you exercise and take breaks intermittently to grab a drink. This is especially important during the summer months, when warm weather and dry air can dehydrate you faster than other times throughout the year.

Choose appropriate clothing

Don’t opt for a tight, wool pants when you plan to go for a walk outside. Instead choose loose-fitting clothing made of lightweight and breathable fabric, such as cotton. If you plan to exercise outside on a sunny day, don’t forget to protect your skin from the UV rays. UV-protection clothing is available. Also throw on some sunscreen, wear a hat and your favorite pair of sunglasses to be cool, comfortable, and safe.

Make an effort to stay cool

Stop in a shady spot to rest for a while before continuing with your exercise activity. When you are done, turn on the air conditioning in your home and relax. Avoid exercising around noon, when the sun is high and the temperatures are at their peak. If you feel too warm after an exercise session, take a cool shower to help lower your body temperature.

Don’t exercise all by yourself

Ask a friend, family member, or caretaker to come over while you exercise. Join a group fitness session. Go for a walk with a partner. It’s important to have someone you know and trust nearby in case you start to feel ill, dizzy, or overheated. If you feel any uncomfortable symptoms, be sure to contact a medical professional as soon as possible. You don’t want to ignore any warning signs of a larger issue.

Whether you prefer to get your cardio workout in by doing a walk, or prefer to do weight lifting to build up your muscle strength, it’s important to choose exercise activities that are appropriate for your physical health and your age. A medical professional, such as a doctor or nurse, can help you develop a program that is beneficial for your health without forcing you to work too hard. Exercise should be a safe and fun activity, something that you can enjoy without feeling tired, sore, or upset after it is complete.
